my opinions on writing in the digital age
writing feels... dead if you don't know where to look. i like substack a lot bc it gives internet writers a place to make money from their writing which is lovely! it just makes me feel a bit like writing for pleasure and fun is dead.
in my senior year of high school i signed up for creative writing and was soooo excited. i hadn't been able to write for fun since elementary school. most of my writing in school was mla format argumentative essays about topics i didn't care about. i wanted to enjoy writing, i wanted my writing to come from within. i like writing about my own topics, my own opinions, etc.
i took english 101 and just finished. it was a lovely class, but no one else seems to care about writing. i love to write! i have a deep need to put my opinions out there even if nobody will read it. in my opinion, everybody needs a place to share their opinions, whether it be their social media, or their personal blog. share your thoughts! write them down even if nobody will care!
i think social media has emphasized short-form content (such as tiktok and reels) so heavily that people do not care about digital writing anymore. blogs are a relic of the past, just like creating your own corners of the internet. now the internet is shared, just like a public bathroom or football stadium. your accounts are not special, they are just one of many fish in the sea. with blogs, i don't feel that. my blog feels special, like a secret corner of the internet hidden away from the hell full of short form content.
i love to browse blogs on neocities, and blogs in general. blogs feel personal, i can learn so much about people from their special sites, so much more than i can from a simple heavily edited video online. everybody needs a space for themself!!!
